Introduction:
The Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research conducts basic science and translational research within the Department of Pediatrics at the Indiana University School of Medicine, offering exceptional opportunities for collaborations between basic scientists and physicians. The goals of the Wells Center are to increase knowledge of the causes and mechanisms of serious pediatric diseases, to develop innovative approaches to diagnosis and treatment of childhood diseases, and to provide an outstanding training environment for medical and graduate students, residents, and fellows. Areas of pediatric research include immune disorders, blood-related and heart diseases, lung development, and cancer and growth disorders.*
Program Format/Goals:
Students will be paired with individual faculty in one of 34 laboratories. The summer research project will be defined in consultation with this faculty. A number of seminars and research-related laboratory and center meetings are held each week. Students and their mentors are strongly encouraged to attend these meetings. Students are also strongly encouraged to attend other academic events that involve the Wells Center faculty (e.g., combined seminar series, seminars of faculty candidates, Weekly Basic Science Research Forum and Pediatric Faculty Research Seminar Series). Interns are required to make a presentation at the completion of the internship.
