2014 Summer Internship Program (June 2-August 8, 2014)
Welcome to the Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research at the Indiana University School of Medicine and Riley Hospital for Children. In this package you will find all the details for the summer internship program. We have designed this program for you to get acquainted with Biomedical Research and some of the career paths that you can take in this field. This is an unpaid internship. All applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
For the 10 weeks of the internship you will primarily be exposed to and conduct biomedical research in the laboratory you have been selected for. You will design and execute a research project in close consultation with your mentor. Students are expected to participate in research for at least 40 hours per week. Before you start your research, the internship program will conduct laboratory safety training and you will complete a short test. Most laboratories hold their own specific weekly meetings, please check with your mentor regarding the locations and times for these meetings.
Close to the end of the 10 week period you are expected to submit an Abstract describing the research you have conducted during the summer. A symposium will be held on August 6th and 7th where you will give an oral presentation describing your summer project. Details for the format of the abstract presentation and other program information are outlined here.
The Wells Center organizes a Weekly Coffee gathering on Tuesdays from 9:00 am to 9:30 am in the Riley Hospital Café. You are welcome to join us for this gathering.
The internship program organizes several talks and discussion panels related to careers in research and other biomedical fields. A list for these talks is also included here. Lunch will be provided after each of these talks, this will give you an opportunity to meet your fellow interns.
To successfully complete the summer internship you are required to attend all the events organized by the internship program. The interns will be awarded a certificate of completion once you have successfully completed the internship. In case you have questions about the program please contact Lynn Pressler (firstname.lastname@example.org). We hope you find your summer internship with us to be both a learning and rewarding experience.
